Description
Sea salt is salt that is produced by the evaporation of seawater. It is used as a seasoning in foods, cooking, cosmetics and for preserving food. Like mined rock salt, production of sea salt dates to prehistoric times. There is no scientific evidence that consuming sea salt instead of more refined sodium chloride salts has any health benefit. The diluted brine of the sea was largely evaporated by the sun.
In Roman areas, this was done using ceramic containers known as briquetage. Workers scraped up the concentrated salt and mud slurry and washed it with clean sea water to settle impurities out of the now concentrated brine. They poured the brine into shallow pans (lightly baked from local marine clay) and set them on fist-sized clay pillars over a peat fire for final evaporation. Then they scraped out the dried salt and sold it. Raking salt depicted on a 1938 British postage stamp.
Benefits:
When salt is taken with water it can help to reduce high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and help to regulate an irregular heartbeat. The alkalizing property of sea salt helps in keeping bacterial and viral infections at bay. Also, the presence of essential minerals like zinc, iron, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, potassium, and iodine helps in boosting the body’s immunity.
Usage:
Cooking with sea salts—red salt, gray salt, black salt or fleur de sel—is a great way to give recipes added texture and flavor over table salt. Sea salt is a great ingredient to sprinkle on top of dishes as a way to give recipes added color, flavor and crunch.
Sea salt is made by evaporating salt water. People around the world have used it since prehistoric times, and it’s commonly found in many kitchens today. Aside from its culinary uses, this salt is often added to body scrubs, baths, beverages, and countless other products.
