Description
In its favor, a stainless-steel garlic rocker is very handy for giving you a uniformly “minced” garlic. That minced garlic much smaller than we could get by hand. For those of us who love garlic flavor in every bite, or if you’re a little shy about your knife skills, this is fantastic.
Rockers are “better for raw garlic but can sometimes be difficult to get a good grip on. It takes some practice, but once you get in a groove it’s relatively simple. Crushing the cloves releases a lot more of the sulfur compounds, making the garlic flavor a little stronger. Whereas chopping garlic will release a little of the sulfur, leaving a hint of garlic flavor in the dishes.
Usage:
You place the peeled clove under a sieve-like web of holes, then press down with hands on each side, rocking it back and forth. While this doesn’t produce the precise bits that mincing does, when the garlic is positioned correctly, it cuts through the fibers that run lengthwise along the clove.
You probably should peel garlic before using this rocker. Peeling garlic can be a sticky, time-consuming mess. Follow this simple tip to make your life a bit easier. To peel garlic, blanch the cloves in boiling water for a minute, then drain. Once cooled, the garlic skins are easily removed. Crushed garlic cloves in a jar may not taste as strong as the fresh ones. They’re usually bland and nearly tasteless. So, it usually takes a couple of extra teaspoons of jarred garlic to get the equivalent flavour of one clove of fresh garlic. For all these reasons, fresh garlic seems to be the best.
A lot of kitchen gadgets are best left at the store, but the stainless-steel garlic rocker is an invaluable tool in the kitchen. It quickly and easily turns cloves of garlic into minced garlic.
